Ryan Lowe, The manager of Preston North End, has explained Calvin Ramsay’s lack of playing time while on loan from Liverpool.
Though his early season at Anfield was cut short by injury, the Scottish full-back joined Liverpool in the summer of 2022 with great expectations and a £6.5 million contract.
In an attempt to get his career back on track, a loan agreement with Preston was reached before the current season; however, another new injury cut short his season before it started. It was followed by a game of Covid-19 as Ramsay’s bad luck continued throughout the holiday season.
As it stands, the 20-year-old has only made two appearances since moving to Deepdale, which is a pitiful figure given that he played in just that many games for Jurgen Klopp’s squad during the entire previous campaign. But Lowe has now acknowledged that his lack of playing time isn’t just the result of the defender’s problems. What the manager thinks is best for the Championship play-off pursuing club would ultimately determine that.
“Ramsay is accessible. He was just cut from the squad due to a COVID-19 diagnosis. He’s healthy and works out every day, but I need to find guys who can come off the bench, in my opinion,” Lowe said to the Lancashire Evening.
“I want more offensive players, and we have Liam Millar moving to the other side or Ali McCann or Browney (Alan Browne) who can cover the right-wing-back hole. Right now, we don’t require an additional player on the bench. He simply needs to wait for his turn, but he is available and fit. Maybe he’ll be able to handle it when it happens.”
Preston, ranked eleventh in the second division, recently finished a festive run of three games in a single week.
Since Ramsay hasn’t played since December 1, perhaps a more lenient January schedule will provide Lowe with a better chance to evaluate his loan acquisition during prolonged training sessions given a run in the squad.
