Ben Foster gives his opinion on whether Newcastle United should sack Eddie Howe. He said he must be…
Ben Foster has shut down suggestions that Eddie Howe is not the right manager for Newcastle United.
The Magpies are now down to ninth in the Premier League and were massively disappointing during Saturday night’s 4-1 defeat to Arsenal. It is proving to be a challenging season for Eddie Howe, who certainly is not going to achieve what he did last season in getting Newcastle into the Champions League.
Newcastle overachieved last season, and that has led to outsiders expecting them to do it again this season. And now that they aren’t, they are questioning Howe’s credentials to get Newcastle where they want to be.
It is a completely short-sighted view and one that the Newcastle owners do not share. They are not considering a change of manager, and Ben Foster agrees that Howe is the right man on Tyneside. Ben Foster backs Eddie Howe as Newcastle United manager
Speaking on Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast, Foster was asked if Howe should be under pressure at Newcastle following recent results and if he is the right man to get the club where it wants to be.
“I think for now he is the guy to do it, he has to be the guy to do it,” he said.
“I think last season they overachieved probably, they have got some very good players and this year they have been very unlucky with injuries. And it’s hard when you have that wind taken out of your sails to pick it up again. “When you have that momentum and you’re winning games and everyone is fit and you’re nicking games in last minutes it just keeps rolling, but at the minute everything seems to be going against them.” Eddie Howe is right for the job at St James’ Park
Foster is spot on. Howe has to be the right man for now. There are so many mitigating factors against him this season that it is difficult to criticize him.
Injuries should not be used as an excuse, but they simply cannot be ignored. It is the main reason why Newcastle is not doing as well as expected. But there has also been a natural regression from the heights of last season. It was always going to be impossible to replicate that.
But this is a process, and Howe is certainly the right man to continue taking us on this journey. Criticism from outsiders is ridiculous, and the majority of people associated with Newcastle United know that Howe is the right man for the job.
